Most facade problems we get asked about are not anchor failures. They are specification failures: the right family of anchor ordered with the wrong plate, the wrong sleeve length, or no fixing plan at all. This guide covers what to settle at ordering time, and which documents to demand before a container is booked.
Adhesive alone carries plenty of low-rise, low-wind facades, and we would not argue with a specifier who uses it there. Above a certain height and wind zone the calculation stops allowing it. Three conditions usually force supplementary mechanical fixing.
An anchor is three components answering three different questions, and any one of them can be specified wrongly on its own. The plate spreads clamping force across the insulation surface, so disc diameter follows board softness. Rigid EPS is forgiving. Soft mineral wool is not.
The sleeve carries that load from the plate into the wall, and it decides how the assembly behaves after years of moisture and thermal cycling. The fixing element settles whether the anchor can be re-tensioned later, because an impact-driven steel nail and a screw behave differently in maintenance.
Plate diameter is where specifications go thin. Buyers name a sleeve length and a material, then leave the plate to the supplier. Our own range includes a 140 mm disc anchor with a 200 mm sleeve, listed as model IN140200, which is the specification worth looking at when a standard plate would crush a soft board.
There is no best anchor in the abstract, only a correct one for a defined set of project conditions.
| Project condition | What it changes in the specification |
|---|---|
| Insulation board type | Plate diameter grows with board softness, and drilling care grows with fibre content. |
| Substrate | Concrete, solid brick, hollow brick and aerated concrete behave differently under drilling, and hollow units need their own fixing pattern. |
| Height and wind zone | Density per square metre comes from the engineer's calculation rather than a rule of thumb. |
| Corrosion environment | Coastal and industrial atmospheres justify stainless or high-grade coated fixings; galvanised steel is the inland default. |
| Fire-critical systems | The fixing specification follows the board system's approval, not the other way round. |
An anchor is only as good as the documents that travel with it. Ask for a technical datasheet covering plate diameter, sleeve length, embedment depth and drill-bit diameter, and ask before the order rather than after it. For European ETICS work, an assessed project will call for a European Technical Assessment issued under EAD 330196-01-0604, or a recognised national equivalent. Pull-out and wind-load reports should match the substrate and board combination you actually have, not a generic concrete block. Batch records matter most on lots that will disappear behind render, because nobody can inspect a fixing once the facade is closed.
We mould anchors, washers and the plastic components around them. What we cannot do is sign the facade. The wind-load calculation, the fixing density and the fixing plan belong to your engineer, because they depend on the substrate on site and the wind zone you build in. An assessment is issued per product and per manufacturer, and it is not transferable. So ask which components are supplied against one, and request the document before a number goes into your quotation. Our own batch and inspection records are described on the quality control page.
Do we need mechanical anchors on a low-rise retrofit?
Not always. Below a certain height and wind exposure, adhesive-only fixing is defensible, and a supplier who insists otherwise may be selling anchors you do not need.
Which plate diameter should we specify?
Work back from the board rather than from the fixing. Rigid EPS tolerates a smaller plate, soft mineral wool does not, and sleeve length is a separate decision driven by board thickness and embedment.
Can you supply the system ETA?
No. That document belongs to the system holder. We can tell you what our own components are supplied against, and provide batch documentation for the delivered lot.
